Import/Export Passwords from Microsoft Edge Browser

In this post, I will show you how to import/export passwords from Microsoft Edge browser. If you are moving to a new device, switching browsers, or consolidating user profiles, exporting saved passwords from Microsoft Edge can save a lot of time. Edge stores passwords per browser profile and lets you export them into a CSV file that can be imported into other browsers or password managers.

Because exported passwords are saved in plain text inside the CSV, this task should be treated as sensitive and performed only on a trusted device, and then the file should be secured and deleted once the migration is complete. Below are some of the best practices when importing or exporting passwords in Edge.

  • ✅ Export only from a trusted device.
  • ✅ Save the file to a secure location (if possible, encrypt the file).
  • ✅ If you must transfer it, use encryption (for example, a password-protected archive) and a secure transfer method.
  • ✅ Delete the CSV immediately after import and empty the recycle bin.

Steps to Import Passwords in Edge

Importing passwords in Edge is simple; all you need is the CSV file of passwords that we exported in the previous step. You can also import passwords in Edge browser directly from other browsers like Google Chrome.

  • Open Microsoft Edge > Click the 3 dots and click on Settings.
  • Go to Passwords and autofill > Microsoft password manager.
  • Click on the three dots next to the + Add button and select Import passwords.

  • Here, you will see three options in the drop-down menu: Password CSV file, Google Chrome, and Microsoft Internet Explorer. I will use Password CSV file because I have already exported and saved the passwords in a CSV file, which I will now import into Edge. You can select Google Chrome or Microsoft Internet Explorer if you want to import passwords directly from those browsers into Edge.

  • The screenshot below shows that the passwords were imported successfully from the CSV file. I recommend deleting the Microsoft Edge Passwords.csv file from your device, as the passwords in this file are stored in plain text and could be easily exposed.
