Disable TLS 1.0/TLS 1.1 using PowerShell on Windows 10/11

TLS protocol is used to ensure privacy and data integrity when two applications communicate. SSL and TLS are both cryptographic protocols, as SSL does not provide a sufficient level of security compared to TLS, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 have been discontinued. TLS 1.0 was released in 1999, TLS 1.1 in 2006, TLS 1.2 in 2008, and TLS 1.3 in 2018.

If you’d like to learn more about these protocols, understand their differences, and explore security enhancements, you can visit the Protocol RFCs (Request for Comments) at the following links: TLS 1.0 RFCTLS 1.1 RFCTLS 1.2 RFC, and TLS 1.3 RFC.

In this blog post, we will learn how to disable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 using PowerShell.

Use PowerShell Commands to Disable Weak Protocols

You can easily disable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 using PowerShell. However, it’s recommended to also disable SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0. We will be using below PowerShell code to create registry keys and registry entries. Once the registry keys are created, a reboot of the device will be required to complete the change.

To run PowerShell code on a Windows 10/11 computer, please follow below steps:

  1. Log in to a Windows 10/11 PC on which you want to disable weak protocols.
  2. Open the PowerShell Console as an administrator.
  3. Execute the PowerShell code provided below to disable SSL/TLS protocols.

Verify if TLS 1.0/TLS 1.1 has been disabled on Windows 10/11

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  2. Type regedit and press Enter to open Registry Editor
  3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols

To confirm whether the protocols are disabled, please ensure that the registry keys and registry entries match what is shown in below screenshot. I have provided registry keys for each protocol; navigate to the corresponding registry key for each protocol to verify if the protocols are disabled.

  1. Your registry check for – Registry Keys to check if TLS 1.1 is disabled needs to change to align with the values for TLS 1.0.

Thanks for this its really useful.
